Letters to myself, New Year Resolutions and Writing Challenges.

Same time last year, I wrote a letter to myself. To be opened in 2019. So I did.

I had wanted to read 50 books and write 50 blog posts.

Ahahahahahaaa.

That wasn’t the funniest thing in there. I had wanted to read the finance pages in the newspaper and understand it. LOLOL.

Nevertheless reading the letter made me smile. And laugh. But mostly smile.

Reading something you wrote a year back is like Facebook or Google reminding you about the photos you took 2 years ago on the same day. Low-key nostalgia. A reminder of what/how you were doing, followed by a reflection of how much has changed since then.

I would recommend this exercise to everyone. Try writing a letter to your 2020 self. It’s a chance to think about where you’d like to be in a year, personally and/or professionally. Its more introspective and personal than just jotting down “Goals” for your New Year Resolutions. Its like a conversation with your future self.

There are many things I wanted to do in 2018. Adulthood hit me like a truck. Alright, I’m not THAT adult-ish, but with finishing college and starting a job I am flailing around to find some time for myself in my new schedule.

I recently came across a post on medium by Nadine and got intrigued by her 31 day writing challenge “Write AND hit Publish”. The title just hit me because I never end up publishing a post on the day I begin writing it. I started writing this one one January 1. Its January 5 now. (Edit: I’m going to hit publish now and the date is Jan 13. See what I mean?)

I once tried a writing challenge in Dec 2017. I failed. Miserably.

But. Am I going to try again? Heck yeah.

People consistently take up new year resolutions to do things that they failed to do year after year. I’ve only failed once. As far as New Year resolutions go, hoping that timing is somehow conducive to the creation of a habit is naive and childish.

So this year, instead of just taking up resolutions, try writing a letter to your 2020 self. Trust me, it’s fun!

And it makes for a great memory 5 years down the lane! :)

If you liked what you read, hit the clap button once or twice. Or 50 times :P

Hit follow if you wanna read more of my work :)
